john king joining us from denver, the site of the debate tomorrow night. john, you've taken a close look at these numbers. are there any nuggets in there that may be good for the romney campaign? because 70% of latinos saying they're likely to vote for the president of the united states, that's pretty bad for romney. >> reporter: wolf, i've scrubbed the numbers, looked at the cross tops and in a word, no, there is nothing encouraging for the romney campaign in the poll of likely latino voters. one way you judge an incumbent president, president obama, you ask people what do you think of job performance? all americans are split on that question. do they approve or disapprove of the president's job performance, but among latinos, nearly 7 in 10, 68% say they approve of the president's job performance. look across looking in here to find some nugget of hope for governor romney as latinos describe themselves as moderates, 76%. conservative latino voters, you would think that would be governor romney's base, 55% majority of conservative latinos plan to vote for the democratic president o

springfield high school on alert after someone followed a female student home on monday night. john gonzalez joins us live the a high school with the latest details. >> this is a disturbing situation and a warning for all parents, especially those living in the west springfield area. an alert has been sent out to parents who have children here at west springfield high school. according to the washington post, a female student was getting in her car in a parking lot of the school monday night around 8:00. there were a number of after- school activities that night. and she was on the road she noticed a suspicious man following her. the man was driving a dark blue four-door sedan. he followed her all the way home. she got out of for car and he tried to approach. she was able to get inside the house before he fled the scene. fairfax county police are trying to figure out of this disturbing case is linked to a couple of fondling cases last month involving two teenage girls and a female adult. all three women walking on sidewalks in the west springfield area were approached by a man and grabbed fr

was winning independent voters by 13 points. and, in 2008 he defeated john mccain by 8% with independent smacks so with the admonition of less -- let's wait until the dust has settled and see the polls in the next couple of days i'm going to be looking at the numbers in the other thing very quickly in terms of the minority vote. the other thing about barack obama's election in 2008 was the one something on the order of 43% of the white vote and in most of the national polls that is kind of where he is so that will be another number to look out for. the country is changing and in 2008, three-quarters of the electorate was white which was down from the mid-to high 80s 20 years ago and that number is going to change. and the question is in a very close election i don't think anyone thought it would get seven-point race. i think they thought it would be a two or three-point race. the metrics are there for him to win. speak to me, and i'm sorry to interrupt but to me i wanted to -- to meet the most stunning numbers from 2008, if you take out the 29-year-olds and look at the 30 plus mccain and

's lead has narrowed heading into tonight's big debate. john harwood is in denver getting ready for the big event. john? >> reporter: melissa, we've got several pieces of encouraging news for mitt romney from not only the wall street poll but swing states poll. you mentioned that mitt romney's closed the deficit among likely voters for obama from five points to three points. and in florida, he's closed from five down to one which is tied given the margin of error in our poll. in virginia, he has closed the gap from five to two. if you look at the state of ohio, a must-win state for mitt romney, mathematically possible for him to get to it without it but his strategists think he needs it. he needs to make progress there. but the fact that some of the national polls are coming back a little bit, some of the swing state polls are tightening, is a bit of an earn couragement for romney that he still has an opportunity for deficit with three or four points to change the dynamic in some way. he's got to hope that obama is not on his best game. you could have a scenario that like what h

compared with 26 terz for mitt romney. romney here is doing worse than john mccain did back in 2008 who got 31%. the latino vote. also worse than george w. bush in 2004 who got 44% of the latino. anna, to you. is there anything at this point that romney can do to get the latino support up? >> well, suzanne, i think praying on novina might help. look, he -- we had a tough primary on the republican side. i think mitt romney has been an unknown commodity to his hispani hispanics. he doesn't come from a border state like john mccain or george w. bush did. he has not done a great intense voter outreach with the latinos because he ran out of money after the primary. he -- let me just be absolutely truthful and give smu straight talk as john mccain would say. mitt romney dug himself into a hole with latinos during the primary. he said some things that are coming back to haunt him. he now needs to find a way to dig himself out of that hole. i think the only way he will do it is if he really continues the intense activity outreach with latinos, speaks to latinos a directly as he can and as often as

. by senator john mccain when he accepted the republican nomination four years ago. the five points were in a different order, but in the speech, exactly the same thing. there's really no real difference. four years earlier, here it is, an almost identical five-point plan was offered by president george w. bush when he was accepting the republican nomination for re-election. now, the five points were in a different order in this speech, in the actual speech. small businesses were mentioned twice. you get the picture in all of this. bush also repeatedly mentioned no child left behind even though it wasn't one of the five points. we need to see president obama dismantle romney as more of the same and dismantle these romney lies. here's the president in wisconsin today. >> whoever it was that was on stage last night doesn't want to be held accountable for what the real mitt romney's been saying for the last year, but if you want to be president, then you owe the american people the truth. >> let's bring in sam stein, political reporter for "huffington post" and also e.j. dion dionne, msnbc

. really from 1858 until 1960, john f. kennedy versus richard nixon, debates didn't play that big a role in presidential campaigns. there were no presidential debates. but you did have in primaries occasionally, squareoffs going on. interesting to even think about stats from minnesota rarely run for president -- stacken ran for president every four years. kennedy/nixon was the game changer in debate history. people that listened to it thought nixon won on radio but on television, john f. kennedy won. nobody was that happy with the debates. we had no debates in '64 '68 '72. came back in 1976 when jimmy carter ended up doing well because of gerald ford's famous gaffe. that's the big question. can you become gaffe-free? everybody is going to be looking wednesday night to see if there was a mistake made by either person. it puts a lot of pressure on the candidates. >> jennifer: you mention nixon and kennedy and those who saw the debate felt like kennedy won. what do you think is more important? what the candida

thing about president obama and the debates with john mccain, it really wasn't so much what he said. it was the way he held himself compared with the way that senator john mccain held himself, and senator mccain looked increasingly flustered. he looked frustrated with candidate obama. i think that the great thing about president obama is that he does have the capacity to be totally in the moment and to be totally funny. he is funny on his feet. and so, you know, for him to practice what he's going to do in case of a zinger, i think he's got the blessing of being rather spontaneous and the blessing of being up against someone who is incapable of spontaneity, reveals himself into" those spontaneous moments like the 47% taped remark to be not a terribly likable person. so i think for the president to practice the way he handles zingers defeats what the president is particularly good at. >> well, actually barack means -- barack means in swahili blessed one, so you got that one right. will president obama challenge romney on the details of his vague tax plan, a tax plan almost every expe

's hear from john in pennsylvania on the independent line. good morning. will the vice-presidential candidates impact your vote? are you there? let's try missoni in fort worth, texas. -- tony in fort worth, on the democratic line. caller: yes, i think it will impact the vote, for me in particular. during the primaries, i think mitt romney and saw that a generic candidate would probably beat barack obama. i think that's why he is not elaborate on any of his plans. then he chose paul ryan, who has a very distinguished voting record and he has written policies that are extremely right-wing. so i think that he has put himself between a rock and a hard place when you are looking at what he thinks and what paul ryan thinks. often conflict over their different views. host: everything happening over the weekend and this week is very busy under the umbrella of lots more polls coming out. here's one in the "washington times" -- the washington post says the race is tight but not in the key states. they point out to that nationally the race is not moved since early september. carol

barack obama presented a quote about john mccain and pretended that president obama was saying it about himself. they defended the ad as honest. romney is running on his business create. he says he created 100,000 jobs as the ce ork as bain. he claimed he had no involvement with managing bain after 1999. but wait a minute. sec filings show him as the ceo and sole stake holder in the company for three additional years. now during those years, what happened? thousands of people were laid off in the bain companies while mitt romney profited. speaking of bain, romney says he's going to get tough on china as president if he's elected. even though his recent tax returns show that he was making investment money all from chinese internet companies accused of stealing american content. he says president obama apologizes for america overseas even though not a single transcript ever shows him apologizing. when mitt romney had a chance to weigh in on the international incident, what did he do? he accused president obama of sympathizing with american enemies. back here at home, romney says the stimu
